Water
is essential for human health; over 60% of the human body consists of water,
and the effects of dehydration can be life threatening. Although there is
considerable disagreement among scientists as to the exact amount of water
individuals should consume each day, the former “8-by-8” rule of 64 ounces per
day is no longer a hard and fast rule. Replacing high-calorie sodas or
alcoholic drinks with plain water can help control appetite and weight, improve sleep and energy levels,
reduce the likelihood of dental cavities or tooth decay,
and help manage chronic conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus. |

Composting involves mixing yard and household organic waste
in a pile or bin and providing conditions that encourage decomposition. The
decomposition process is fueled by millions of microscopic organisms (bacteria,
fungi) that take up residence inside your compost pile, continuously devouring
and recycling it to produce a rich organic fertilizer and valuable soil
amendment (see Using Your Compost To Amend Soils).
Sound complicated? It's really not. All you need to know about composting is a
basic understanding of a few simple principles, and a little bit of elbow
grease. |

Most modern synthetic cleaning products are based on age-old formulas using natural ingredients that were passed down through the generations because the chemistry was
right. Going back to the original naturally derived ingredients is a
way to make cleaning products that work, don’t pollute and save you
money. Most are found in your kitchen cupboards. Mix and match with
well-chosen and environmentally friendly green cleaning products found
in health food stores, and you can easily and simply transform your home
into a non-toxic and healthy haven. |

It would be great to be able to guarantee that you will be able to
attend a step class every Tuesday and Thursday evening, but that pesky
little thing called life can often mess up even the most dedicated
exerciser's plans. Before you bemoan the waste of what could have been a
great fitness day, consider some of the sneakier ways you can fit
aerobic exercise into your schedule.
Stair Strength Stairs
really are an easy way to burn some calories and strengthen your
muscles. If your daily commute involves the subway, make a point of
bypassing the escalator in favor of stairs; if you park your car in a
garage, skip the elevator for once. |

This sweet potato pie is
southern-style homecooking at its best, with a rich pie crust bedecked
with pecans and a creamy filling with just a hint of bourbon. This is a
great pie for a Mardi Gras dessert table but is delicious any day of the
year. If you prefer, you can make your own sweet potato puree; simply
boil about 2 pounds of sweet potatoes, remove the skins, process the
flesh in a food processor or blender and measure out about 1 3/4 cups of
the mixture.
